Not the heat of it, that had vanished long before the end, but the sound. The roar that swallowed her world, the crackling collapse of everything she had been standing on, the way the smoke curled into her lungs like a final, greedy hand. This was cold. Crushing, endless cold.
Crucifix's first breath in the Afterlife tore itself from her chest as she broke the surface of black water, choking on the shock of it. The Depths clung to her like tar, dragging at her limbs, pulling her down as though the flames had followed her here in another form. She kicked, fought, clawed her way upward with a desperation she hadn't felt in life. The water tasted like metal and old memories. When her hooves finally scraped something solid, she dragged herself forward, coughing, trembling, her mane plastered to her neck. The world around her was nothing but shadow and the faint, dull glow of a horizon that didn't seem to belong to any sky she knew. The only path was the strip of grey rock ahead. Barren, silent, waiting.

Just the Depths.
Just the cold.
Just the beginning of something she did not yet understand.
With a final shake of water from her coat, Crucifix stepped onto the grey shore and began her walk toward Ethereal Reach, toward whatever story waited for her now.
The white patches of her coat where more a dull brown now thanks to all the dust or maybe it was ash that figured in the air.

She has awoke here alone, her memory a lost cause. She'd only a few moments of silent peace before one of the fine whiskers on her muzzle was pulled, she had sat up so fast the small purple and grey bird had been sent flying, served him right the little shit for plucking at her whiskers!
When he told her his name was degan and that she was to follow him she had rolled her eyes at him. Her rewards, the suicidal creature had pluck a whisker again, earning him to nearly loose his tail feathers when she had returned the sentiment by snapping her teeth at him.
Not know where she was, or able to remember a whole lot she had opted to follow him.
3 days later she was seriously reconsidering a herbivore life. Eating him was looking more and more like a good idea now.
Not only was she sure she was completely and utterly lost, he hadn't stopped talking for more than a few minutes. Seriously she needed some damn ear plugs, she had long ago stopped listening to what he was saying.

Cold is all I've ever known...

Or at least it is all that I can remember on either side of the darkness. Here on this side the cold is sharpest and demanding my attention, what little I have to spare. It is bone deep and liquid, sloshing about my numb limbs and lapping at nostrils that are barley fluttering with breath. My brain is only half awake at best but that is enough to recognize the danger. My eyes snap open to more darkness and I try to swim but my body does not obey the mental signals. It is stiff, sore, heavy... much, much heavier than it should be and it is sinking.

Again I struggle flailing ineffectively at the deep dark waters. From slivers of fragmented memories I dredge up a feeling of déjà vu. I think I have fought a similar battle in the recent past. Fought and mayhap lost. I do not wish to loose again.

I will never know if it is determination or pure luck but some how, some way I manage to resist the grasping pull of the deep water and keep my head above the surface until I wash up on a barren, rocky strip of shore. Here I sprawl half in half out of the water, spent beyond all endurance but still breathing. My eyes fall closed again. There will be time enough when I wake... if I wake... to puzzle over the oddity of a large, four legged and hoofed body that is very much not my own.

OOC NOTE: She will not be written in the first person normally. It felt appropriate for this post though.

She could say it had been a long time since she had freely roamed, but that would be a lie. The monster had done as she pleased for so long, though never had she truly walked freely in the sunlight. Now that...that had been many years. Decades, even? Perhaps. The concept of time was lost on Regan now. She had been forced to endure the reality of the immortal life the mad doctor had forced upon her. So many years evading would-be heroes trying to fell the beast that lurked in the shadows; so many years surviving through the insanity that always clawed at the recesses of her mind. Time was merely an illusion to the titan who did her best to stick to the shadows. Her "gift" had tortured her day and night, only granting Regan short reprieves of clarity.

The Gift. The mere idea of it made the creature sneer, causing the skin around her grotesque cheeks and jaws to pull uncomfortably. It had never been hers. It had been someone else's, stolen and forced upon her when she was most desperate to be free. It had acted as a second entity in her mind, which Regan didn't doubt that it was. It knew she was not its true master. Yet...its grip on her sanity waned the further she traveled away from the ruins of her birthlands. That was a startling, but pleasant, development. It pushed the creature to be constantly on the move, seeking to find the end of the tether.

However, a part of Regan hesitated to stray too far away. What would happen to her if the tether broke? Would her mind break again, allowing the magic to finally win? The mere idea of losing everything Regan had struggled to control since her initial escape made the titan wary of pushing her luck. Yet, despite her disdain, it would be the very thing that would push her forward.

However, her once immortal life was unironically cut before Regan could figure out how much control she truly had. One moment, she was in the woods, taunting the monster hunter that had stalked her for months - the next, darkness. A blip of serenity, the soft voice of her mother calling her home...

Then water.

Her pale eyes blinked as they rolled wildly, while Regan recklessly thrashed. Scrambling for purchase, her hooves slipped on the sand beneath her, causing the mare to further stumble off balance. Regan's pale eyes squinted, trying to block the painful rays of light that sliced through the hazy sky above her. Finally able to right herself, the mare realized death had come finally come to collect its due and yet, somehow she still existed.

With a start, the titan realizes the silence that had settled upon her since her abrupt awakening. She can hear her own thoughts, clearly, for the first time in...well, a long time. Since the experiment had changed her. There are no whispers clawing at her consciousness or an oppressive force behind her eyes, trying to break her steely will. A tired but relieved sigh escapes from between her teeth and Regan feels herself relax.

Perhaps now she will truly be free.

Holy Hell, there was water in his nose. Water in his eyes. Water in his lungs! Water everywhere! Which he inhaled. Drank it all in, because he needed something to breathe. Water, air. Whatever. But it burned, and stung, and still, he still...couldn't...breathe. And then it sunk in. Sunk into his soul, creeping up into his head, into his limbs, like ice crept across still water. Sunk like he was currently sinking, suffocating. He would not go like this. Yet it seemed that was his fate, and the copper male closed his eyes and waited. And nothing. He felt himself waiting, felt his legs, and neck, and head. But the thunder that lived inside his heart was absent. And Death approached...or had it already?

Why the fuck was there water? Because, even in his foggy, quickly fading memory, he had not been submerged in The End. Eyes widened and leaden limbs jerked as he fought the chill, the disorientation, the exhaustion. He could feel it all. Could feel everything except his heart pumping. Shit. Where...

There was no gasping breath as he broke the surface, but a water-expelling, frame-shaking cough. Only then, when he'd partially emptied his lungs, could he take in the oxygen. Sweet, cold, life-giving. He could feel his tail dragging behind him, water-logged and heavy. It had been too long since he'd done any swimming, but somehow his limbs remembered how to move. The water stretched dark and murky beyond him, the world a monotone in shades of grey. But the stallion saw land, or what seemed to be land, an expanse of stone in the distance.

So Miysha hauled ass. Kicked a little faster. And when he finally reached it, he let out a series of hacking coughs. Wherever he was, he could still feel pain, and boy did it hurt. Like Hell. Oh. Hell. The young stallion barked a hoarse laugh which only resulted in more wheezing and coughing. But he'd thought it was fiery and red...not empty, and watery, and grey?

It was only when he caught sight of his reflection did everything start to spin. Woah... He'd been a wicked thing in what he supposed was life, reckless, careless, chaotic, irresponsible, but this, this was a whole new level. Razor sharp, he knew, because as soon as he'd made this very interesting discovery, he'd stabbed himself with a limb. Oh, the things he could do with these bad boys. And his eyes! Fluorescent, golden, utterly awesome.

Oh, what a wretched, damned, lifeless place. Heh. Lifeless.
The strong smell of blood stained the air, powerful enough that one could taste it. It was hard to locate the scent through the strong salty tang of seawater. The water was stained red, and bubbles slowly began to form. The more bubbles the more red appeared, blood. The bubbling grew faster, larger. Just as a black shape began to move towards the surface, a black muzzle burst from the water. Sharp heavy gasps as the creature fought to take large lungfuls of air, red orbs looked around panic filling the usually calm face. His mane clung to his neck and face, powerful legs kicking to keep him above the water. Where was he? How did he get here? Why couldn't he remember?! Snarling his lips flashed his mouthful of sharpened teeth, his weapons. A heavy cough rolled through his body, forcing him to shake with how violent it was. Red orbs slid closed as he forced himself to calm down, body bobbing in the water like a duck on a lake. Snapping open he forced his body higher out of the water to see if he could try to find land, he faintly could make out the shape of land in the distance. He swam, and by the time his hooves touched the sand he was exhausted. His sides shook hard as he struggled to breathe, his legs felt so weak. Like one felt at birth and the struggle it took to stand at their mother's side, he noticed only then that the scent of blood was overbearingly strong around him.

His muzzle twitched towards his legs, it smelled like it was coming off him but he didn't see any wounds. Sharp eyes scanned the area, his head raised slowly as he sharply exhaled. Bloody mist rolled past his lips, shaking himself hard to distill the seawater from his body. A dark grin plastered itself on his lips, he stepped forward not seeing the blood that began to flow from the cracks in his hooves. Or the blood flowing from his eyes that made trails down his face, he either did see it or he just simply chose to ignore it. His long tail flicked behind him, the more he walked across the beach the more he wanted to know where the hell he was. He didn't recognize anything here, skull rising high he stopped in his tracks. Tall audits rose as he heard the faint sounds of birds, gaze narrowing he trotted towards the sounds. He walked past the beach, heading towards what he thought was a path out. It was, but it was blocked. His steps slowed as he drew closer. Noting two large shapes perched on rocks, watching him. It was two crows, really large ones. The one closest to him turned its head, soulless black eyes staring deep into his being.

"Draugr....fresh....blooood." The one closer to him hopped over, wings spreading to land on his back. Head rising up he snarled, twisting around to deliver a bite. "Stooopppp......Thanatos..... we help...OuR LorD...." He paused, ear flicking to the second crow. Giving the one on his back a murderous look he turned his attention to the one still perched on the rock, his chest heaved as he inhaled. "WhaT.... dO... yOu... asK... of... US... mY... lORd.... ThanATos.....?" He studied them, something told them that they would obey his every word and whim. A deadly gleam glistened in his scarlett orbs, scarlett drops stained his lips and teeth as his lips parted to speak. "Death." Blood flowed past his lips, slowly forming into solid blades before shooting out past the crow perched on the rock. The dying shriek of a rabbit filled the air, the two corvids took to the air cackling as they flew toward their food. Yes, they will serve their new master. And do whatever he wished.

Her body cold but not as dead. It craving the air and begging for an escape. The mare opened her eyes and despite her better judgement started to swim away from what felt like home. She would have stayed there forever but fate had other plans. With a good push of her broken wings, she broke the seal of the depths and took a deep breath. The waves pushing her onward and to a shoreline with colors much like her own. She sighed, not amused by what just happened. Now what? She wonder to herself but didn't expat an answer.

Then fire, white hot and blinding, engulfed her. Agony ripped through her body, a rally of all the pain she’s ever felt. Her divinity nor her kirin attributes could protect her from sacred flames.
The heat dissipated, replaced by cold. Nuwa burst forth from the waves of the depths, rage blazing in her eyes.
She took a deep breath and settled her expression into something more neutral. She sent a wary glance about her. No one had seen that, right? After confirming that she was indeed alone, she released a huff.
Oh, she knew this was the afterlife, and she was going to find her way out. No matter what.

Cybele remembered the shore and how the gentle waves rolled against the sand and rock. She remembered the solid rock underneath her hooves as she peered into the depths, then something pulled her under.

Deep. Dark. Cold.

Her vision blacked out. The cold sunk so deep into her bones that it dimmed to nothing. The taste of salt faded from her tongue. Silence took a hold of her.

Then her senses rushed back all at once. Her eyes fluttered open, the icy coldness of the ocean around her prompting her legs to flail. She sucked in a breath and cringed as water flooded her nose. She thrashed wildly about until her head broke through the surface.

Upon reaching the shore, she staggered out of the water and stood, shivering. Sand clung to her hooves and the wet fur of her legs. Her silks and jewelry hang heavily upon her and she looks at her various accessories in dismay. Those were expensive and could not have her already poor day become any worse due to something breaking.

Fortunately for her, both body and accessories were intact. Nothing was ripped or scratched, and though her legs and lungs ached, she was otherwise alright. Still trying to make sense of what happened to her, she slowly trudged through the sand, leaving the sea behind her.

Trying to take a breath and having his mouth not filled with salt was almost impossible to maintain and he kicked, holding his head upon the water in an attempt to keep himself alive. He didn’t die, right? What was even going on? Kicking again, looking for the bottom to stand on, Mellow attempted to swim to get somewhere. It had appeared to be a nightmare, like a bad dream he could wake up from eventually, though once there was water inside his lungs again, he slowly came to the realization this wasn’t a dream. Confused and frustrated, his back hit a rock (it hurt shit) before being dragged by the waves somewhere away again, water splashing everywhere: in his eyes, in his nose.
For a minute then, he ended up fainting from the shock. Energy in his body was nowhere to be found either but fortunately by then, the waves delivered it to the shore from which it couldn’t get up from.
